What is Corpinnat?

The Best Kept Secret of Spanish Sparkling Wines

When we think of Spanish sparkling wine, the first name that usually comes to mind is Cava. But in recent years, a new name has begun to resonate with sommeliers, winemakers, and fine wine lovers: Corpinnat.

But what exactly is Corpinnat? Is it a type of Cava? A new region? A brand? Here we tell you everything you need to know about this appellation that is revolutionizing the world of sparkling wine in Spain.

Corpinnat: A Collective Brand of Quality

The wineries that make up Corpinnat share a firm commitment to quality, sustainability, and tradition. To label a wine as Corpinnat, much stricter requirements must be met than those of the traditional Cava D.O.

Key rules of Corpinnat:

  1. 100% organic grapes, hand-picked
  2. In-house winemaking at the winery (no maquila)
  3. Traditional method (second fermentation in the bottle)
  4. Long aging:
    – Minimum 18 months for basic sparkling wines
    – Up to more than 100 months for some Gran Reserva
  5. Fair payment to winegrowers
  6. For the most part, native varieties are used: Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Parellada, among others.

This artisanal approach results in sparkling wines of great depth, terroir expression, and elegance.

Is it Cava or not?

Although many Corpinnat wines used to be labeled Cava, the founding wineries decided to abandon the Cava D.O. to differentiate themselves with their commitment to excellence.

For this reason, Corpinnat wines no longer carry the word “Cava” on the label, even though they are made using the same traditional method.
